With a fascination for the natural world, Philippe Caron Lefebvre is interested in the translation of natural phenomena into the art-making praxis, embodying a logic of constant metamorphosis. His research pays attention to life found in nature through the morphology of species, a curiosity on the peculiarities found in the fauna and flora.
Thriving on offering a physical and visual experience for the viewer, he wants to create sensations through a dedicated material experience. Like a moth attracted to a light bulb. His images and objects can provoke feelings of fear and disgust but also be empowering and seductive, portraying forms of paradoxical forces.
In order to explore this tension, the artist has sourced his influence in the science-fiction genre. This genre offers possibilities around a critical viewing of the social, ideological, technological and ecological challenges. It is a tool to speculate around and outside our sole definition of existence from the humanistic point of view.
The core of his practice strives to find a balance in new material paradigms, navigating between technical prowess and deskilling, multiple histories of aesthetics and the natural world. His work advocates for democratizing arts and crafts, with values that support sustainable practices.
Philippe Caron Lefebvre is a French Canadian multidisciplinary visual artist. Before embarking on his art studies, he spent his youth alone in the dense forests of the Laurentian Mountains, north of Montreal, Canada. Drawn to the mysteries of nature and the relationship between wildlife and human impact on the environment, he has forged a profound connection to his roots, daydreaming of alternative lifestyles.
Initially apprenticed to ceramist, he then went on to complete his undergraduate degree at Université du Québec à Montréal, followed by a Master's degree in sculpture from Concordia University. He has taken part in various artist residencies, including Atelierhaus Salzamt (Austria, 2022), Fondation LaNapoule (France, 2022), Art OMI (USA, NY, 2019), and Banff Centre (Canada, 2018). His work has been exhibited in Japan, Italy, Mexico, United States, and Canada.
In his recent projects, Caron Lefebvre has engaged in diverse and compelling explorations. Notably, he conducted an encyclopedic investigation into spike aesthetics, research into the technical aspects of glaze crafting and ceramic practices, examined our habits of image consumption with collage, played around speculation and science-fiction writing, and researched on the legacy of sculpture in the 21st century.
