Gail Coito’s heavily textured collages feel like silos from faded memories. Architectural elements, figures and images of nature are aggregated into complex and surrealistic still lifes. The mysterious familiarity to her work pulls viewers in, only to be confronted with a myriad of symbols to decode.
My work intrinsically evolves from a symbolic realm, manifesting as visual poems or narratives reflecting a moment frozen in time. My art reflects the powerful forces of love, language, memory and nature and the indelible marks they leave upon the human spirit. Texture and composition secretly unfold into the themes I convey. Mostly, I simply allow the materials to speak to me, and intuitively, a completed piece appears. I hunt through the papers and ephemera, expose my deepest feelings and strive to create a bright imagining.
