Laura Quevedo’s collage work tells the stories of strong female characters. These powerful, mysterious women are combined with aged ephemera of gridded mechanical drawings and numbers, a contrast between the organic and geometric. There is a strong sense of place in her work that contains metaphoric and symbolic meanings beyond their surface appearance. Quevedo invites us to respond and interpret the layered symbols of everyday life.
My work revolves around memory and identity. The pieces are telling a story about life, about the connections with ourselves, with nature and with the issues that concern me; it’s also a social reflection and at the same time a desire to find other views. Everyday situations are mixed with unreal worlds, immense in their ability to surprise. I have a special interest in social issues, intimate stories in which children, women and the rural areas are the protagonists. My intention is to visualize stories, bring back memories, sometimes to create fantasies. Always thinking of the viewer as a channel of communication which completes or transforms the work with a personal interpretation. I firmly believe the world makes sense when we interpret it in our own way.
