Blues Singer, 2021
Paper collage, 8 x 11 in.

Paul Henderson’s practice processes and responds to the vast repository of images created throughout history. As he digests the world around him, creating a collage is a meditative process where he slows down time. The result is a visual journey into new dimensions where the windows act as portals, not just into new universes of Henderson’s construction, but windows into the self.

Existential Perspective, 2020
Paper collage, 5.5 x 8 in.
Heroes & Leaders (Father&Son), 2020
Paper collage, 8.5 x 10 in.

Over the last ten years I’ve developed an analog collage practice that has moved through minimal abstraction, simple obfuscation and erasure, chaotic visual noise, and on to work that is more traditionally pictorial, illusionistic, and currently, figurative. My exploration is motivated by attempts to develop a unique visual language, to find and create meaning or a point of view, and to take an active, creative role in my own life, to make something.

I don't set out with the intention to make a collage 'about' a particular subject, but instead let ideas and meaning develop through the making and curiosity, often incorporating chance. I try to create work that oscillates with humour and seriousness, horror and beauty, life and death, and an openness to let the viewer in.
