Paper collage

Maria Elisa Quiaro’s abstract works of immense natural beauty and expressive visual power employ movement to make magical figures appear under black and white photographs of cloth. The folded textile elements of her collages reference those of draped fabric from the classical sculptures of the Italian renaissance. What is present is just as important as what is absent.

I am interested in aspects of abstraction. My work explores significant ways or strategies of deconstruction and reconstruction of the visual image. Abstraction, opens up new forms of engagement with the phenomenal world and gives the possibility of diverse readings of the same forms, ranging from formalist and transcendental to conceptual. Today collage as artistic expression is more actual as ever before. The world has become a kaleidoscope of senses and visual inputs. My work engages with abstraction through the consideration of an increasingly fragmented world in terms of its evolutive or "devolutive" conditions.
