Irja Syvertsen’s works evoke a skepticism of the grand narratives associated with Modernism. Unidentifiable floating fragments torn from the past appear in newly constructed, futuristic contexts. These collages exist beyond simple modes of classification, hierarchy, or identity. Post-modern strategies are employed, and the elements appear as simulacra.
For [Syvertsen] the combinatory play with images or sculptures is a continuous game. Fragments extracted from film, popculture, old worn down encyclopedias about the milky way or art magazines are forged together into a new universe. This process fluctuates between 2d and 3d, back and forth, as it does in time, doubting between future and past. Her pieces are small and almost condemned to the domestic plane, which she supports. The home, the house, the street, the everyday life, this is where she situates her work.
