Katrien Orlans' collages embody the symbiosis between the human form and spirit. Her minimal compositions exude an air of rebellious intimacy, composed of carefully selected found photographs that merge fragmented emotions. The work evokes a robust emotional response that speaks to the viewer's innermost desires. Orlans' output is a mesmerizing dance between the tangible and the intangible, revealing the complexities of the human condition through a harmonious and evocative visual language.

CLIMAX, 2022

Collage is a way to tell a story with true fragments of my life, (sometimes) sexual tension, poetry, and always as cinematic as possible. The possibilities are endless; how fantastic is that?

SHARP, 2021
14 x 17, 5 cm

Collage artist/photographer Katrien Orlans creates a parallel universe that takes both the sharpness and the sensuality of our existence to a tempting climax. Orlans has never settled for rigorous structures or beaten tracks. At sixteen she decided to quit school and work her bendy way through the world. It wasn’t until she turned forty – after a lot of experiences and a sudden job loss – that she decided to delve into photography and collage art.

It became a world that she can make her own completely, with a good splash of slightly covered rebellion and a leading role for shameless yet refined sensuality. Trauma and pain, female boldness and sexiness are the challenging paths she often combines in her work. She does this explicitly with small diptychs in which two sections flirt and uplift each other’s meaning. One plus one makes three. The mood of her photos as well as her artwork is still yet charged. Her work throws an unpleasant and uncomfortable feeling on you, as if you’re witnessing an undefined turning point.
