Bonnita Postma creates assemblages utilizing found portraits as her primary medium. Her work has a distinct sculptural quality, expertly melding figures of disparate backgrounds and nationalities within her compositions. Examination of Postma's work reveals a unifying theme: regardless of origins, every individual shares a common, fundamental humanity.
Collage for me is an unlimited realm of possibilities to explore themes that are relevant to me. Anything can be imagined, a new surreal world I've never seen before. Found photos are my paint to paint, my words to write, my stones to sculpt.
Bonnita Postma
In my series 'me myself and i' I remake found vintage photographs into assemblages of new faces, new portraits of people whose identities are not bound by stereotypes of gender, age or colour. By re-photographing the collaged portraits I restore them to their original form. In my series 'Bodies" I explore themes like identity, feminism, sexism and body image. I extract fragments from vintage porn books to use them as building stones to create a new reality.
