Jessica Humphrey possesses over two decades of experience in the fashion industry, having collaborated with brands such as Ralph Lauren, Coach, and DKNY. Her collages explore the tangible properties of textiles, the intricacies of patterning, and the boldness of color blocking, drawing inspiration from vintage fashion magazines. As a distinctive art form, collage has the ability to transcend conventional boundaries and challenge our notions of what constitutes art. Through her creations, Humphrey embodies the limitless potential that collage offers, expanding the horizons of this ever-evolving movement.
I like the idea of taking garbage and giving it new life by making something beautiful with it. My paper collage work is made from old fashion magazines I used as inspiration from my former career as a fashion designer, which is also a way of honoring my past and evolution. For my glass collages, I save all of my broken pieces and cast them into beautiful abstract compositions. So, making something beautiful out of the ashes of the past and failure is a big part of my process.

There is an intentional side and a subconscious side of my work. Intentionally, I collect a bunch of shapes and colors and out of that chaos, I create balance. On a subconscious level, my work explores ideas and issues around being a woman. Recurring themes appear in my work that a lot of girls + women experience, like conflicting feelings of wanting to be seen and wanting to be invisible, of masking strength in exchange for love and acceptance. I am currently exploring collage and glass and how the two mediums intersect.
