Paper collage and acrylic on board, 29.5 x 37.5 cm

There exists an underlying tension between the chosen materials of Danilo Brandão's collages. The process of deconstructing identities is manifested through deliberate incisions and the intentional application of paint in a gestural manner, establishing backdrops of vibrant hues. Central to these evocative compositions lies the enduring interplay between the human figure and its natural environment.

Nervous Murk, 2019
Paper collage and spray paint on board, 21 x 29.7 cm

To me, collage is an incredibly versatile form of creative expression. It offers endless possibilities for visual communication, exploring various themes and concepts, and conveying complex emotions.

One of the things I appreciate about collage is the freedom and flexibility it offers. There are no strict rules or guidelines to follow. It does not demand a high level of technical skill, allowing for anyone to try their hand at it. However, it does require a sense of composition and spatial awareness to successfully integrate and balance the elements to create a cohesive whole.

The experimental nature of collage brings me great joy. There is always room for exploration and discovery within this medium, whether it's through new techniques, materials, or ways of combining different elements. It is an art form that allows for endless possibilities and encourages creativity to flourish.

Seeking Shelter, 2015
Digital collage, 3000 x 4247 px
Beauty, 2008
Paper collage and acrylic on board, 21 x 29.7 cm

Characterised by broad use of colour, texture and imagery to construct a series of narratives, my art is a graphic gesture that seeks to express a complex fabric of visual influences, abstraction and a multiplicity of subjects.

The presence of an evident and practical building system is central and a recurring detail throughout my artwork, establishing distinction and a strong and dynamic voice that can accommodate a variety of visual expressions, favouring the conceptual and abstract qualities as well as the accessible.

Complexity is perhaps the most distinct and pronounced expression in my process. It serves as a visual articulation and a sensitive connection to vastly different works.

Beauty, joy and the unexpected are central to the pieces. There is an appealing and artful aesthetic in service of a larger theme, but with space for interpretation and some degree of projection for those that want to look deeper and find out more.

Balancing the immediacy and aesthetic pleasure of photography with a graphic tone, my art creates a lively overall language that conveys ideas and feelings.
