Marcia Mello arranges the diminutive remnants amassed over the course of a day, week, or month. By systematically assembling these fragments by hue, narratives of an individual's life experiences gradually materialize. Ultimately, these inconspicuous slips of paper that accompany us on our life's journey serve as endearing mementos, encapsulating the trajectory of our personal odysseys.
Collage as Memory— Collage is both fragments of memory and formal abstraction that reveals unseen spaces shaped by images and stories. My collages are abstract visual diaries, works given in shapes and stories. They share fragments of myself and the world around me, past and present. They can be autobiographical or a way to identify time.
Marcia M L Mello
My artistic expression is intrinsically associated with my education and training in design and architecture. As Modern Architecture—a movement that mostly influences my work— was generated by Modern Art, my art becomes a continuum of the art-architecture duality. The formal abstract manifestation of my work is guided by organizing systems, regulating lines, grids, and geometry. This way, my artworks are both abstract diaries, works given in shapes and stories, and a memory of time, present and past, as they share fragments of myself and the world around me.
