James Gallagher is a master of contemporary collage and has been celebrated globally for his bewitching visual investigations into personal identity and the human form. With a keen sense for re-contextualization, Gallagher forges bonds across ages by connecting universal experiences of the human condition.
To me, collage is the way in which I’m able to express my thoughts and emotions. My process is completely intuitive and has developed over decades based on deep-seated habits and passions. I work in a very spontaneous manner: get it out quick and figure it out later. The final collages are raw, rough around the edges, and full of the scraps and debris from my studio. This mess is the DNA of my work. It's all extremely personal. And totally human.
