Janice McDonald is a visionary collage artist who has the ability to find beauty in minutia. She crafts visual puzzles from fragments of paper and photographs, turning them into intricate and powerful compositions. Her unique pieces are rich with detail and depth, inviting viewers to take a moment to appreciate the complexity beneath the surface.
Originally I thought of collage as simply a very graphic and compelling medium, but over the years I’ve realized it has completely infiltrated my way of seeing/thinking. Collage has become much more about making subtle connections (visual or otherwise), working abstractly, dealing with positives and negatives, embedding meaning, being resourceful, and taking creative risks.

Always observing and evaluating possibilities, I collect obscure and overlooked materials to re-use in my work. Ripped from their origins and any context, these salvaged pieces of color and texture have an inherent strength, imbued with potential. Elements are considered, selected, placed in relationship with other components, and eventually combined into collage or assembled compositions. The transformation from fragmentary to whole evolves over time as critical connections are made. I work to resolve this dynamic puzzle of my own making — often referencing concepts of growth, environment, the passage of time and attempts to find balance.
