Steve Tierney's collages operate within a disoriented nostalgia, utilizing vintage magazines from the 1940s and '50s as raw material for his compositions. He creates fresh narratives through selecting, cutting, and reassembling, situating his work within the discourse of the ready-made and the photograph as object. His manipulation of these found images emphasizes their status as cultural signifiers and prompts a reconsideration of past and present relationships.
For me collage is its own unique way of looking at the world from a different perspective. In the same way that skateboarders find alternate uses for everyday architecture, a collage artist looks at photography, printed materials, and often literal trash differently than most people. I’m truly fascinated by the idea that I can take something that has an intended purpose or meaning and cut it up and reassemble it to say something completely new. What I really love are those moments when I have no idea what the new meaning will be. But when I get there, it makes complete sense, as if I kind of knew it all along.
