Blue Abstract, 2022
Analog collage, 15 x 21 cm

Sean Lee's work incorporates symbols of unease to construct enigmatic scenes. The compositions demonstrate a sophisticated sense of balance, with circular motions directing the viewer's gaze throughout the artwork. Lee's pieces invite the observer on a journey from the known to the unknown, where the realm of the imagination and the dreamlike surreality of the mind become uncovered.

The Amethyst Hotel, 2023
Analog collage, 21 x 30 cm

For me collage is a calm space to lose time and enter a flow state. A way to allow the subconscious to process a confusing, troublesome and sometimes beautiful world. Having spent a long time making music and never really learning to draw, collage has allowed me to express things visually that I previously could only do through music. I’ve always had an attraction to mysterious objects. Especially books. Collage gives me an excuse to collect strange and wonderful things and process them on my own terms. And in turn, create something new for other to explore. Creativity in general is like a shared conversation which has been going on for thousands of years. Collage allows me to humbly add my thoughts to that conversation about what it is to be a conscious in a possibly infinite universe.

Mathematicians Delight, 2022
Analog collage, 21 x 26 cm

Sean Lee is an artist, designer and music producer living in Bristol, UK. I am a collector of 1970’s encyclopaedias, books of logarithms and rain damaged fly posters. I regularly steal chips of spray paint from local graffiti spots and misuse library photocopiers. I use found materials to make collage. I aim to create work that reflect feelings of haunted nostalgia, childlike wonder and sometimes unease. Like fragments of fevered dreams, half remembered past lives or glimpses into parallel worlds. I aim to make the damaged beautiful, the mundane dreamlike and the everyday nightmarish. Old page layouts, numbers and diagrams create structure alongside the torn edges, weathered paper and more chaotic source material. I mostly work by hand but I sometimes recycle analogue collages and create digital works from scanner warped versions of originals.
