David Paull's collages are seductive and provocative. Traditional notions of masculinity are blurred when sensual elements merge with vintage imagery mined from bodybuilding magazines. Fragments of flowing fabric are delicately placed over the figure, reminiscent of Rene Magritte's 1928 painting The Lovers. In some works, muscular arms and legs blend seamlessly into the folds and drapes. The illusion of rhythm and movement paired with rich and lush colors create expressive and passionate compositions.
Collage is an outlet for me. It’s silly, bizarre, fun and exciting because you get to come up with unique combinations in a whole other dimension. I like to evoke moods and fantasies through fortuitous combinations of disparate elements.

My work is a way for me to explore fantasy, creating dreamlike and moody compositions. I really enjoy the process of finding vintage imagery from male physique magazines along with other sources and combining it with different textures and patterns to create the illusion of movement. When I work, I like to think of my pieces as still from a film or video, creating tension where you as a viewer aren’t sure what’s going on or what will happen next.
