The creation of an extraordinary collage can stem from the most ordinary moment, as demonstrated in the works of Kubi Vasak. By repurposing commonplace images and textures into psychedelia, he engenders a transformative experience that propels viewers from one dimension to the next. Vasak's artistic contributions extend beyond his own creations, as evidenced by his founding of the Sydney Collage Society in 2015, which has served to promote, showcase, and support the works of emerging artists in Australia and beyond.
I love the physical tactility of collage. Bold colours, striking imagery and a balanced composition are key. Creating new narratives and telling a story within the work is important in my process. The happy accidents that take place when I create collage, is my favourite part of the process. I also believe that the title is important - It helps ground the work and gives the viewer a little peak into my wacky mind. At the end of the day, I hope the viewer can experience some positive or reflective emotions when they view my work.
Kubi Vasak
Forming intersections with different forms and images, Vasak uses collage to create an uncanny world where the sequencing and division of time, space and memory are forgotten, leaving only the subject present within their surreal, dreamlike surroundings. He uses hand-cut paper collage to create works that reveal the absurdity and humor inherent in the human condition. Working predominantly with vintage materials and bright coloured paper, Vasak fuses disparate, juxtaposing elements into unexpected, yet perfectly balanced relationships that are at once weird, wacky and beautiful.
