Kate

Cuthbert

Kate Cuthbert was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. Having studied both Interior & Furniture Design, she moved to designing & making jewellery before successfully landing herself in the art of analogue collage, where she creates under the name satin&tat.

"I work with primarily paper and love both modern and vintage materials... I cut with both scissors and an X-acto knife depending on the image and the paper quality."

Kate's process is organic and free flowing. She allows her collages to happen naturally and resists overworking them. Kate favours a clean and minimal aesthetic with negative space featuring prominently in her work. Print Magazine described her as 'a mastermind of minimalistic geometric designs' noting "her layouts are sleek and clean and often feature vivid, bright colours."

Kate aspires to create engaging collages that might calm the viewer for a moment. She intuitively responds to her materials which act as a conduit through which she can express her experiences. Kate is drawn to transforming found images into something new, with her work exploring fashion, shape and colour.

Kate has, and continues to, exhibit around Adelaide. Her work has been exhibited at Joy Gallery in San Francisco and she was invited to take part of the inaugural exhibition of The Scandinavian Collage Museum in Norway and Sziget Festival in Budapest.

Kate has been published alongside international collage artists in the prestigious Collage Collective Co Annual in both 2015 and 2017, New York publication We The People-Satellite Journal as well as Italian Oltre magazine. In 2021 US Print Magazine named her Instagram account as one of the Top Five Collage Artists To Follow On Instagram.

Kate has collaborated with Australian and international collage artists including Zach Collins (USA), Itchi (FRANCE), Karen Lynch (AUS), Kellette Elliott (USA), Emidio IsHere (ITALY), Franz Samsa (ITALY) to name a few. She has collaborated with Australian label Kitty Came Home on a range of clutches, journals and jewellery launched in April, 2021.

As well as private commissions, Kate's past clients include Long Story Short, The Miscreant Vintners, Spanish fashion designer Cristina Ruiz, sleepwear brand Sleep Squared, Australian stationery brand Earth Greetings and luxury UK brand, Ted Baker. Kate has provided album art for The Wanderers and The Vanity Cure. Her work has been published in The Wall Street Journal.

Satin&Tat is a fixture on the Adelaide market scene where she sells gallery quality giclée prints and other printed products, including greeting cards. Kate also teaches collage workshops.

In 2019 Kate created minima, an offshoot of satin&tat, where she creates shape and colour sttudies.
